How Does It Work?

Students in grades 4 and 5 are invited to join the FES Mock Newbery Book Club in September. The purpose of the book club is to expose students to a variety of high quality books while learning more about the criteria and process used to select Newbery Medal.

Book club discussions will be held in the FES Library during lunch on selected dates from September- December. In the past we've had between 60-80 students join the book club, so we'll meet in small groups. We typically meet once or twice a month, and we use the Newbery Medal criteria to discuss the books. Students are asked to read at least 5 books from the reading list.

Students may check out copies of the Mock Newbery books from the Falmouth Elementary School Library. Falmouth Memorial Library also has copies of the books, and many students use Inter-Library Loan to put books on hold. Students may read the books independently or listen to an adult read the books aloud. Audiobooks are also a great way to read the books.

Occasionally there are optional meetings after school that may involve enrichment activities such as Skyping with authors or blogging about books from the list.

Fourth and Fifth grade students who read at least 5 books from the Mock Newbery Lists will be eligible to vote for the FES Mock Newbery Award in December. The winning book will be announced at a school assembly or via the morning announcements.

  1. I love your blog! It's been a great resource and inspiration for me these past few years. I wonder, where do you get your funding for multiple copies of these books? I want to set up a similar club for my students!
